Marshall Solar, LLC

Marshall Solar, LLC is a Delaware Limited Liability Company authorized to conduct business in Minnesota. Marshall Solar is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC. NextEra Energy Resources is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc (NYSE:NEE). NextEra Energy Resources is one of the largest generators of solar energy in the United States and currently owns and operates approximately 785 MW of solar facilities in the United States and Canada.

Project Overview

The Marshall Solar Energy Project is located in Lyon County, approximately four miles east of the city of Marshall, Minnesota.

The 62.25-megawatt photovoltaic solar energy generating facility will generate enough electricity to power approximately 15,000 homes with 100% Minnesota sunshine.

The Project interconnects to the existing Lyon County Substation located on the corner of County Highway 9 and 290th Street. The Substation is owned and operated by Northern States Power.

Benefits to the Local Economy

The Marshall Solar Energy Project will:

  • Boost the local economy by generating approximately $400,000 in annual tax revenue during the operational life of the Project that will benefit local government and area schools.
  • Create jobs in Minnesota. At the peak of construction, this Project will employ close to 250 workers; with an average workforce of approximately 150 construction workers.
  • Create education opportunities for local teachers and students through hands-on solar-related Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum provided by the Project.

Project Timeline

Marshall Solar started construction of the Marshall Solar Energy Project in May 2016, with commercial operations schedule to begin in December 2016. Key Project Milestones include:

  • March 2015 - Site Permit Application Submitted to MN Public Utilities Commission
  • April - May 2015 - Site Permit Public Scoping Meetings & Comment Period
  • September - October 2015 - Environmental Assessment Published / Public Hearing
  • May 2016 - Issuance of Site Permit
  • May 2016 - Construction Begins
  • January 2017 - Project is In Service

Affiliates of NextEra Energy Resources currently have three wind facilities in operation within Minnesota - all under long-term power purchase agreements with Northern States Power, an Xcel Energy affiliate.
